OOOOHHHH NOOOOO!

We were in the van and the radio was turned down really low when something caught Harrison's ear. It was a Blue Bell Ice Cream commercial....the one where the dude sings the "just like the good old days" song. I thought at first they were excited because it was about ice cream and then I remembered that they do not eat milk products...which normally induces whining, not celebration and the frenzied "turn it up mom!" that was coming from the back seat. So what was it? They thought I had finally came to my senses and changed my taste in music...which includes everything but new country. So it has been brought to my attention that my boys, yes MY BOYS, have taken a liking to new country. They have spent too much time in the car with Lolly.

My ipod is has a lot of good country music, but I care nothing about sexy tractors or crawling watermelons. I tried to convince them that Ryan Adams is country and I have two versions of Frankie and Albert and tons of Johnny Cash and Willie and Merle and Bill Monroe. Tom T. Hall doesn't even scratch the itch...they want something different....something I can't give...ask Tiff and she'll tell you. I'll give in to praise music, but that is where I draw the line. Not redneck with women with mud in their toes songs. I remind Harrison that he's been singing "Tennessee Flat Top Box" since he was two. I've even listened to Brenda Lee's "Grandma's Feather Bed" until I thought my ears were going to bleed...was glad when that phase ended.

So when Lolly keeps them this week so Bob and I can go to Tom Waits, she will be getting a mix tape...ok a cd, but I still call them mix tapes and I'm one of those borderline music nerds that loves to put together a good one. It will be their normal music rotation...Tom Petty, Chuck Berry, The Ramones, Crash Test Dummies, Bob Marley, Cat Stevens and the only Kristofferson my kids are going to be listening to is "Sunday Morning Coming Down" or "Me and Bobby McGee". You hear that Lolly?! There is going to be a quiz!

And while the deprogramming begins, please know that my kids still rock...

and maybe I can give in and get the one song that makes Sully say, "Wowwy has the buckaroo song on her radio." I mean I allowed a High School Musical song to enter the rotation after Harrison explained that "It was wild and mellow at the same time. It's like freedom in a cup!" Harrison likes to quote movies out of context, but that makes it funner and who could say no to that? So why not one Rodney Atkins song? But only one...maybe...to be continued...
